Comments on "paraguard" copper IUD?!

Question: I have a woman friend who is considering getting one of these due to the fact that they use no hormones, and are supposed to be very reliable. Does anyone have any positive or negative comments to relate regarding them. Thanx.

I had the copper IUD device fitted and I had it removed after six months.

The copper in the coil effected the lining of my womb ( or so I was told ) and encouraged me to have really heavy and prolonged periods. One month I was bleeding so much that I had to go to the hospital and they gave me some tablets for blood clotting it was so bad. I do not recommend this type of coil. When I had this coil removed I had the Mirena hormonal IUS inserted in its place and my periods have virtually stopped. One of my Friends has managed to fall pregnant whilst having both types of these coils. Unfortunately she miscarried but I have not had this problem at all luckily.

I hope this hasn't been too negative, I am just telling you what happened to me and my friend.

The ParaGard IUD often causes heavier periods and cramping, but these effects usually lessen over the course of the first year after its insertion. It's very reliable (99.4%) for pregnancy prevention. It's the most effective form of nonhormonal birth control.

The Mirena can cause the same side effects as the Pill: weight gain, mood changes, etc. Both raise your risk of pelvic infections. If an IUD isn't a good fit for a woman, it can usually be removed easily. I hope everything will go well for your friend!
