What are the pros & cons to having a hysterectomy done at the age of 43.?!

Question: I have painful periods & crazy pms.

Answers: I have painful periods & crazy pms.

Well, the pros are, obviously, that your painful periods would go away. However, don't bet on your crazy PMS going away. If you have strong reactions to hormones now, that is likely to continue after you have your ovaries removed, because it's a factor of HOW your body responds to hormones, not just what hormones there are. Of course, you will have more options as to what hormones to take when you have no ovaries. But my concern is that you might just be trading one problem for another--there's no way to tell if things will get better or worse in that regard until after the surgery is done. There are also a number of problems that could arise from getting your ovaries and uterus removed--and you won't know if you'll have them or not until after the surgery. Like, will it have sexual side effects? No way to tell until that time. Of greater concern is that having your ovaries removed increases your risk of Parkinson's and dementia unless you take hormones until age 50. (see: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/oophore... My advice is to exhaust all other avenues of treatment before taking this irreversible step. For example, birth control pills can eliminate your periods (with Lybrel, you will have no periods) and can minimize or fix PMS. Alternately, there's Mirena IUD, which also will cause your periods to stop.

my gf had a total hysterectomy done last year at 46--no more periods no more pads-less worry about cancer-sex any time she wants--drawbacks--sex drive dropped some- at times harder to get worked up -hormone imbalance-still has heat flashes

EM, THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN GIVE YOU GOOD ADVICE ON THIS IS A QUALIFY GYNECOLOGIST.

well i dont know exactly but my mom had one done when she was either 39 or 40(i cant remember) and she had to go back into the hospital because she couldnt go to the bathroom and she had and infection. but she's better now and she's happy she had it done

just get it done. You'll be happy. And they should be able to do vaginal hyster, which isn't so bad. Otherwise you're looking at at least 7 more years of this crap.
