My mother looks pregnant but definitely isnt.....?!

Question: My mom has been diagnosed with pancreatitis and a gallbladder problem. She also has had ulcers and a drinking problem most of her life. She is 46 and I saw her for the first time in a few months yesterday and her stomach is huge. Her body as a whole hasn't gained weighter, but her belly is big like she is pregnant. Can anyone give me their insight into why she looks this way? I think I may have read about it somewhere. Thank you.

Sounds like she has ascites, which is fluid in the abdomen. It could have been caused by her pacreatic problems or she could be having liver problems due to he chronic alcohol drinking. I agree w/ everybody else on the board, she needs to be seen by a doctor.

It sounds like she is bloated from the pancreatitis. She might also be experiencing kidney and liver problems from her drinking.

Ask to have her ovaries checked, please.

pancreatitis is a bad problem - she could have developed fluid in her abdomen - if it gets really bad (sounds like it is already), they can drain this fluid. she should see a doctor if she isn't already.

That sounds bad, have her get checked out ASAP! Poor lady!

I have a sister-in-law that had this condition, she like your mother drank alot. Her liver was swollen and she had cirrhois of the liver and hep c.

Sounds ike a very well known problem known as "she ate all the pies"

It sounds like side effects from the pancreatitis. I would also be very concerned about liver problems. A friend of the family has been a drinker and has major liver problems and he looks 9 months pregnant.

She could also be experiencing liver problems since Pancreatits can affect Liver function (the Pancreas, Gall Bladder and the Liver share the same duct to the bowel). Perhaps her Liver is inflammed.

Either way, get her to a doctor ASAP if you think her life is in danger!

I'm 28 years old with no lower abdomen health problems. Before I had my son I was 125 pounds with a 26 inch waist. they weighed me the day i went to have my child I was 213 lbs. After coming home I was 189 lbs. I gradually went down to 179 and stayed there for two years. everyone thought I was pregnant again. I have recently gotten down to 155. I am very slim in the bottom and on my arms, but my belly looks like I am 6 months pregnant and has looked that way since I got pregnant. I say all this to say that not all women lose their gut after having babies. However. I have known LOTS of older women who looked pregnant and later had to have hysterectomies because they had cysts and tumors.
