Scarring after breast biopsy?!

Question: i AM 28 YEARS OLD AND HAVE 3 LUMPS IN MY LEFT BREAST AND 4 IN MY RIGHT BREAST. I am having a core breast biopsy performed within the ext month (haven't been given the exact date yet). My sister had the fine needle biopsy and she has a small keloid in the area where the needle went in. I'm worried because the lump they are going for is rather big and I have been told it may leave the breast disfigured/dented. Has anyone had this problem and if so, how bad is the denting?

I had the breast biopsy done on my right one and it did scar-mine was removed though so they made an incision. The Dr said you could rub vitamin E cream on the scar though and it would lessen it. You may try that. Also with any anesthesia I would say yes have someone drive you.

Well im very sorry to hear that and i hope it all goes well for you.

My mother had breast cancer and she had the breast taken off. This may not be an option for you or you may not want it. But i hear the denting isnt very bad. it may be a little disfigured but not to a degree were you cant ware a bathing suite.

Good luck in everything. my prayers will go to you and your family.

You definately need someone to drive you for a couple of reasons. One, if you have a reaction to the local, you may be unable to drive. Also, if there were to be any problem, like you panic, which can happen, they may want to sedate you with something like valium and then you'd need to have someone drive you home.

When you have a needle core breast biopsy, the incision is very small. The radiologist uses a scalpel to make a "nick" in the skin, and biopsy needle enters through that nick. The incision is only about an inch long. I have not seen, nor heard complaints, of scarring. I have also not witnessed disfigurement or indentations caused by needle core biopsies. In fact, part of the advantages of this procedure, over open biopsy, is no disfigurement. Usually, the whole lump or area is not removed, but small tissue samples from within that lump are removed for tissue analysis by a pathologist. Most breast lumps, in young women, are benign, so total removal of a benign area is not necessary. If the pathology comes back as malignant, then the surgeon will take you to a surgical setting, and remove the whole area.

I would bring somebody with me for the procedure. This is not because of any drug reaction or anethesia, but for my mental health. It is nice to have somebody who cares about you there. Once your procedure is done, we ask you to take it easy for the rest of the day, and keep icing the biopsy site. This is to reduce bleeding, which leads to hematoma and bruising. By the next day, you can go back to your normal activities.

There are good sites which describe the procedure at these sites. I suggest you read about the procedure, so you are well prepared. I am unsure if you are having a x-ray guided biopsy (stereotactic) or ultrasound guided biopsy, so I have included both types. Best wishes!
