I have never actually been to a gynecologist, but my family doctor does everything that a gynecologist would do including pap smears and breast exams. I didn't have a pap smear until I was 22 and wanted to be prescribed the birth control pill.
If you are sexually active it is recommended you see a gynecologist (or other doctor that does pap smears etc.) but if you've never been sexually active, most say it is ok to wait until you're 21 for a visit unless you are having any problems you need to see the doctor about before.
It is never "fun" going for the appointment and even those of us that have been many times don't really look forward to it, however it is over quickly and you only need to go once a year. Try not to be scared (I know we are all a bit nervous), but the more relaxed you are, the easier it will be and it is over very quickly..
your 20 you should probably go to make sure everything is working smoothly!
I'm about 15, and I've never gone.
18 or sexually active, which ever comes first. Nothing to be scared about, when it's over you'll wonder what you were so scared of.
