US Birth Control Prescription valid in the UK?!

Question: I take it for medical reasons, but pharmacies in the US won't give me more than 1 months dose at a time. I'll be traveling to the UK soon and might remain there for several months. Will my US prescription (expires Dec 2008) be accepted by UK pharmacies?

It wont be accepted as a free NHS prescription, and in all honesty I dont think you will find many pharmacists who will risk doing it. They are under such tight legal restraints, much the same as doctors, and one slight error could cost them their job. If its not filled in exactly the way it should be, it can cause big probs for the pharmacist. Ive worked with many pharmacists in my life and all have refused to dispense on foreign prescriptions.

It would be easier to bring your prescription or proof of what pill it is you take with you, and visit a GP as a temporary resident and say you forgot to get the prescription before you left America.

No i dont think so, but to be sure you could ask your medical practitioner befor you come to the uk.

Speak to your doctor before you come to make sure you have enough of your precscription drug with you. I think pharmasists would be cautious about dispensing a forgien script.

No, it will not be accepted by any pharmacy outside the US. The same goes for any prescription prescribed by a physician who is not authorized to practice in the country where you're trying to get a prescription filled.
I don't see why US pharmacies won't let you get more than 1 month at a time. That's extremely unusual, since most doctors prescribe 13-15 refills, and most pharmacists encourage you to have 2-3 extra packs on hand, in case you miss a pill and have to start a new pack, or in case your start date is on Sunday. When I was on birth control, just a year or so ago, I always got 4-6 packs at a time.
Go to a normal pharmacy, or ask your doctor for help. Or go to Planned Parenthood's pharmacy- you can get 12 packs there.

It will not act as an NHS prescription, so unlike our contraceptive prescriptions it will not be free. However if it is signed by a physician, dated, has your name on it and is for a drug with the same name as a pill here, some pharmacies might accept it. However it might be quicker and easier in the long run to attend a GP here and obtain a valid prescription that way.
