Essentials for a strong immune system:

healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables (the darker the colors of your fruits and vegs, the better), whole grains, nuts, beans, lentils, lean meats (red meat optional), low fat dairy, fresh or canned fish,...

7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night

daily exercise

quality multi vitamin with minerals

additional calcium and fish oil supplements

Stop with all of the hand sanitizers unless you work in the healthcare industry. You are killing off bacteria that fends off diseases!!!

De-stress (stress significantly harms the immune system)

Avoid working night shifts

Avoid drugs, excessive alcohol consumption and tobacco

Make time to just sit and read or meditate by yourself in a quiet room

Get a dental check up. Chronic gum disease can stress and compromise your immune system.

Go for a complete physical including blood work.

You know, you may be OVER-disinfecting everything, which actually makes you more susceptible to germs. I eat an apple and an orange every day and rarely get sick, thank God.

You are probably not immune to germs that's why when something does come you cant handle it.

I grew up on a pig farm, always had a horse and must have eaten more than my fair share of muck. I used to be able to go up to 18 months without having any kind of illness at all, so it didn't do me any harm!

These days I'm getting older and live in a city ... currently got 2nd cold in two months - my theory is that this winter is a bit crap for colds!

lay off the lysol. some germs are good things. I know it's hard, i'm a germaphobe too, my husband calls me 'Monk'. But, i've come to realize over the years that if i dont stress myself out over things like that that i'm much happier and healthier. Like the first answerer said, you could be breaking down your body's defenses by eliminating too many of the germs. That's how vaccinations work, they introduce a form of the germ or virus to your system, let it build up its own natural defenses, and then when you do get the real thing, it's not such a big deal, and chances are your body can defend itself without you even knowing. ;)

everyone gets an equal amount of sickness in their lives...some are sick as children (mine) and others get sick as older adults....Kids are really healthy until you put them in daycare, then its 6 months of sickness HELL...keep doing what you are doing to minimize the effects.

Echinacea, astragalus, zinc, vitamin c, raw garlic, cayenne pepper, kombucha

Try preventative stuff, like the most powerful anti-oxidant on this planet -talked about by Dr. Oz called Goji. I take it and if you want to know more and how I have not had a cold in 4 years or the flu, e-mai me! All the diet, sleep, etc is a great answer but nowadays we need energy and what Oprah's show taked about.
