What is this thick tissue-like case that came out of me during my period?!

Question: I don't mean for this to be gross but I'm highly concerned. I just got on birth control a month ago and I started my period today. As I was pulling my tampon out to shower, a thick tissue (sac-like thing) of some sort came out of me, but it didn't hurt. It was rather large. This has never happened to me before, and I was wondering what it was. Was it the natural endometrium layer or could it have been something else?
