I have had two IUDs inserted but these were copper 7's. the frist one was back in 1982 and it was after i had had my son. The procedure is similar to having a pap smear but they insert the IUD through the opening in your cervix and once in place the applicator is pulled out and the IUD remains insitu. A fine cord will remain hanging out through your cervix but this is important as that is what is used to remove the IUD.

Symptoms following insertion include cramping and maybe some bleeding. But this will soon settle. Periods maybe more painful and be heavier. An IUD works by changing the lining of the uterus and making it unsuitable for an embryo to implant.

You can continue to wear tampons and the cord will not interfer with sex. You need to watch for smelly vaginal discharge as it could mean you have an infection and will need to see a Dr.

All in all an IUD worked for me as effective method of contraception over a period of approx 8 years. In regards to your trauma of being sexually assualted then you need to take a friend with you and mention this to your Dr. Ideally a female Dr through family planning clinic would be of preference. Email me if you have any other concerns.

Take care and sending you a BIG HUG.

the doctor will place a small thing in to you uterus thru your vagina that goes along floating and scraps the sides of the uterus wall, so that if any fertilised eggs atach it will remove them.
i dont believe that you should have any cramping, but you may the fist day or so, and it you tense up alot down there then you may want to ask the doctor to sadate you so that you will relax for him to put it in.
or he may just put it in while you are in the position for a pelvic

so no worries and good luck

This procedure is little bit painful, for some it hurts a lot for others no. And it takes 10 minutes only.
Some women with IUD experience cramps, spotting, bleeding and some times needle brick like pain.
