Would it be better to have a tubal ligation or a hysterectomy?!

Question: My mother has terminal cancer (started at breast, breast was removed, and now through body). I want no more children. Already have 3 ages 16, 11, and 2. My family has a history of different cancers. Considering this, would a hysterectomy be better in the long run?

Few physicians will do a prophylactic (preventative) hysterectomy. It's an abdominal-incision surgery that can require up to 3 months' recuperation. In addition, if the hysterectomy is total (ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus) you will have surgically-induced menopause.

Regarding tubal ligations, there is the theory that interfering with the vascular system of the fallopian tubes can cause post-tubal-ligation syndrome. http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/a...

You don't mention whether there's a history of ovarian or endometrial cancer in your family. If you're concerned about cancer, discuss your options with your physician.

If your main concern (other than cancer) is birth control, you may want to discuss vasectomy with your partner/husband. While tubal ligation http://12.31.13.3/library/healthguide/en... and hysterectomy require general anesthesia, a vasectomy requires only a local anesthetic and is done in a physican's office http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/v...

If you don't have cancer, there is no guarantee that you will get it, even if it does run in your family. If you don't want any more children, I myself, would just have a tubal ligation. It's a simple procedure and afterwards you won't have to deal with taking hormone pills .....that can cause cancer. My heart goes out to you, but also remember, that today, a lot of insurance companies won't pay for anything that doesn't have to be done.

Not if you don't need one. Do the tubal ligation. If you r getting a pap every year I think that's plenty for cancer detection and just let your doctor know your worries if he/she doesnt already know.

I had a hysterectomy at the age of 22...if you just get a tubal, you still have your periods...10 years with no periods...it's like heaven, lol...plus it reduces your risk for certain cancers. It is, however, more invasive than a tubal ligation (which is used for birth control and removes nothing) and has a longer recovery period. A tubal won't cut your risk of anything, it's just birth control. You don't need hormone pills after hysterectomy...only after your ovaries are removed...you can just get the uterus out, which is how mine was done.

You are in the exact position I am- was. You need to consider several factors. If you are wanting prophylactic surgery to avoid cancer, it needs to be discussed in length with your doctor. You may want to also discuss keeping or not your ovaries; the need to tack up your bladder. Many women with that have had several children loose bladder position that will make you leak latter on. My problem is I am seeking prophylactic surgery for my breasts. In our family it is not if, but when you get breast cancer. I want to remove the possibility. There is many options now a day for women. AND REMEMBER- if the doctor you talk to isn't forth coming or at least TRYING to be understanding what you are saying to him- move to the next one.

I vote for the tubal ligation if nothing is wrong with you. God put parts in us for a reason and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If you choose the hysterectomy and you don't have a complete hysterectomy then you are still at risk of ovarian cancer.

If you are not 50 your doctor will want you to take hormone replacement to protect your bones. Hormones increase your chance of breast cancer not to mention they can also increase your bad cholesterol level and they are hard on your liver and they make you gain weight.

If you have the tubal ligation you can stop taken birth control pills which is a form of hormones that have bad things going for them also. With a tubal you get off all artificial hormones better for your body. You ovaries keep working like they should to keep up your real hormones that is a good thing.

Then again you could just have your husband have a vasectomy!
