Answers: Try light exercises, like walking, sit-ups, etc. or put a heating pad on your stomach.

Menstrual cramps are believed to be caused by many things, but the sex ed teachers I've had said, and what I've always believed is that the cramps come due to the muscles contracting and twisting, trying to push the blood and lining out of your body. Ways to get rid of them are:
1. Midol (menstrual relief pill), take one or two, depending on how bad the cramping is.
2. Exercise usually helps, try sit-ups, or other exercises that work out your abdomen.
3. Warm baths (not hot because that will make your period heavier) may soothe the pain.
4. Heating pads or hot water bottles where it hurts will help soothe the pain as well.
5. Somehow, bananas help.

Midol is available OTC Exercise is good too.

I don't like taking pills either. I usually take a nice bath and relax and maybe eat some chocolate :D I think it's different for everyone though, but I find keeping myself distracted seems to work best of all.

Try taking aspirin. It will thin the blood. If it's to the point that you are having a hard time functioning, see your Md for other options.

Personally, mine were so bad that I was taking 2 Percocet and 800mg of ibuprofen to take the edge off (still had a lot of aching). I ended up on bc continuously to not have periods (and it's been great!)

I hope this helps
