Considering the IUD, but I haven't had children?!

Question: I'm reading up on the IUD, and I find articles from women stating that they have Mirena and they haven't had children before getting it. Although, I was on Mirena and it said that having at least one child is a requirement. I was wondering if anybody can verify with personal experience?

There are Dr's out there that will insert the Mirena in a woman who hasn't had a full term pregnancy. Check out the IUD Divas they have a lot of answers to many IUD questions.

I have the Mirena and love it.

The reason why most doctors require you have at least one child prior to getting the IUD inserted is because if you have not had a child there is a much higher chance that your uterus will expell (push out) the IUD.

Well, I am 14 so no sex yet, so obvious no kids, but in parenting, we learned that with the interuderin device, you can really mess up. If you have it removed to have kids, it can scar you up, causing you to be infertile, or causing problems with your eggs. You can have it done without kids, but if you want kids, it's not the best.

My friend had the IUD without having had children. Her doctor said it was fine. But she got a type of yeast in her womb from it and had miscarriages and couldn't have children. Then she had to have surgery and she was able to get pregnant and have a child. To me, it's not a good idea to mess with your possible ability to have children.

I actually got a Mirena put in this year, my husband and I have only been married for a little longer then a year but we don't want kids for at least a few (maybe 5). I talked to my Dr about it because I had read the same thing and it is really based on whether or not the Dr. feels like it is best for you. For the first month or so it is rough with it in (cramps, and possible spotting) but after that first month it is GREAT! I don't have to worry about having to take birth control anymore and I feel like the sex is that much better because its off my mind! I would really talk to your Dr. and ask more questions... the cost and the time not worrying about it is great! Good luck!

Most gynos wont implant it if you havent had a child because it increases the risk of miscarrages and tubal pregnancies. If you already have a child it is not as devistating if you later find out you cant concieve again. Even if you dont want a child at the time, you may change your mind later and then find out you cannot get pregnant. This prevents the issue.

Idu's aren't the best. I know one woman who had the IDU and she still got pregnant.
when she delivered the baby came out with the idu. The IDU is suppose to prevent the fetus from going it doesn't stopping implantation.

When I talked to my doctor about getting an IUD, I was told that 9 out of 10 doctors won't give an IUD to a woman who's never been pregnant or given birth. It is possible that the IUD can affect your long term fertility, making it more difficult to conceive and carry to term. According to my doctor it's considered a minor side effect, but she's obligated to tell me about it anyway. Also, women who have never had a child have a higher risk of the device shifting, falling out, or otherwise becoming ineffective so the failure rate of the IUD is partially determined by whether or not you already have kids.

My doctor had no problem giving me the IUD as long as I understood the reasons most doctors would NOT want to give it to me. If you're at all concerned talk to your doctor about their personal feelings about the IUD and what risks or side effects there are in women who have never had a child.
