Ladies: what has been your (or a close friend's) experience with the Depo Pr!

Question: I'm asking because i was just put on this drug to stop me from having monthly periods...because I'm very anemic....

Did you stop having periods? How many months before they stopped? Was there spotting or full blow periods or what?

When were you on the Depo (aprox what years)?

What do you know about it that you can tell me? thanks!

I've known 2 women who've been on that. The first was a close friend, and she gained 27 lbs. in 3 moths. She also experienced terrible mood swings, and said she felt like she was PMSing 24/7. She stayed on it for another 6 months, gained an additional 5 lbs., and then decided to quit. Most of the weight must have been water, as the majority was gone within a couple of months. The second person was my sister-in-law, and she was on it for a couple of years and had no side effects at all. Neither had a period during their time on it.

Just wondering, why did your Doc. decide on the shot instead of the many pills out there? Or did you try that type and still have breakthrough bleeding?

Add.: Ahh, I see why you are asking when. My friend was on it over 5 years ago, and for my sis-in-law it was 3 years ago.

My friend was on it for several years. She got fat and grumpy sadly. I liked her better before she was on it. =P

I got on Depo- got deathly ill!
I was in and out of the hospital, I lost 50 pounds!
dehydrated 3 times, and I bled the whole 3 months that the injection was supposed to last for!
So I didn't take another shot.
guess what! it hasen't stopped until this day!
I developed a bacterial infection from the constant bleeding, and I was told I would NEVER have children because of the injection and what it has caused for my uterus.. I got pregnant, and it was a miracle! she is 7 now, and we have been trying for years now, to no avail, I have been unable to get pregnent all because of DEPO!
I strongly urge you to take another contraceptive! why take the chance sweetie...

When I was on the shot I had occational spotting, no period and gained 30 pounds... I was 19. It all started immediately. I don't highly recommend it to anyone but because of your Anemia probably the best and easiest solution.

i heard of people having problems getting pregnant after the came off of the drug. i also have heard of people gaining 20 pounds or more. i dont see why you cant be a regular pills- they moderate bleeding as well. my step mom used to be on normal birth control pills cause she would hemorage and it moderated it

The first couple of months I bled like crazy...seemed NEVERENDING!!! But I stuck it out. I was 16 when I got on it...now I'm 25 and have yet to have a period since that horrible first couple of months! However, my friend got on it at the same time and she bled for almost 6 months straight...I kept telling her to wait it out (thinking she'll do the same as me)...she ended up switching to pills...she seemed to do better on that...Remember that not all bodies are the same...you won't know how your's react until you try it out a couple of months...if after 3 months you don't like it then ask the doctor for something different....BEST OF LUCK!

This is probably no help to you because I was on it over 5 years ago... I gained about 30 pounds, was depressed... BUT it did take away my period for the time being.

IMO it is a HORRIBLE drug that I'm appalled is still on the market and being administered, and the people its being jabbed into are NOT informed about its serious health issues!

I stopped taking it two years ago, was on it for four years.

Others have such horrible experiences on it that there are several class action lawsuits against the makers of this drug.

I would really look into another option, if this is the only option then GOOD LUCK! :)

I got a depo provera injection back 14 years ago. I had an 8 week straight period and turned into an emotional distaster. I never had regular periods even afterwards (not that I did before the shot either) Only one injection. I am terrified of messing with my hormones artificially with BC pills or anything. Chasteberry is a natural way to balance hormones in females and help regulate periods with no side affects. Finally at 27 I was in balance - and I attribute it to chasteberry and healthy diet.

Oh yeah It took me 10 years to get pregant after it as well. May be just me and my hormones or possibly the depo played a factor in that as well...
