Well, for starters if you are trying to a self breast exam- you are going about it completely the wrong way. Of course the breast tissue will feel hard if it's all squished together. There are several websites available which go through the proper techniques to do a self breast exam correctly. I suggest you do a web search, pick one, and check it out. For your information as to how you would know if you have breast cancer, you wouldn't. What you would discover is a lump or bump of some kind. Then you would go see your doctor, and have a biopsy done of the lump, either with a needle to aspirate some of the tissue or in a surgical procedure to remove the lump. Then it would go to pathology, where it would be checked by a pathologist to determine if it were cancer or not. That is the only way to find out for certain if you have breast cancer or not. If you can't figure out how to do the self exam from the website directions, then make an appointment with your gyn and have the doctor show you. If you do it along with the doctor, you can learn what it is you are feeling in normal tissue, and what sort of things to look out for. Most gyn's even have a falsie of sorts, which will have lumpy bumpy things so you can see how they tend to feel when you find one. In the meantime, quit squishing things together. Your breast tissue would appreciate it.

No hardness when squeezing is not normal but one other way you will be able to tell if something is out of the ordinary is if you feel any lumps that feel hard and are not easy to move. I would recommend seeing your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think is going on.

Do regular self breast exams so that you become familiar with your own breast tissues.

If you feel anything out of the ordinary, see your doctor. Do not presume to know, EVER!
