Birth control and Planned Parenthood?!

Question: I am 17 and want to use birth control pills. I am not yet sexually active, but plan to be, and I would also like to benefit from regular periods, etc that come w/ the pill. Even though i'm underaged, can i still get bc pills from Planned Parenthood? How much will they cost and do i have to get an exam because i am still a virgin? Also, will they only provide a one month prescription my first time or multiple months. Answers from those w/ personal experience are greatly apprettiated. (i'm in southern california btw). I live w/ my grandparents and am not comfortable talking to my grandmother about it, and frankly she would freak out if she found out i wanted to use the pill, even if it was only to regulate my period. I dont need any critisism about haveing premarital sex. thank u.

You will get an exam when you go, and also will be asked if you have health insurance. dont worry if you dont have insurance, they also can bill you based on whats called a "sliding scale" which means you only pay what you can according to your income. The first time I went there, I was your age, and still in school, so I only paid about $2 per pack of pills. You're supposed to go every few months for check ups, so they'll most likely give you a few months worth. Just be sure to have some cash on you when you go so that you can pay. I was raised by my dad & great grandmother so I totally understand your situation. You're making a great choice to want to protect yourself, but dont forget to use a backup method, just in case. ;)

i used to be on the pill at plan parent hood they go by you income and you can by up to a year you dont have to get an exam but its a good idea to look for other stuff such as cancer cells

I am glad you plan to use birth control pills. The cost of them varies depending on which brand they put you on. I use a generic brand of Ortho Tri-cyclen and its incrediably cheap. Also, when you go to get birth control pills they will do an exam and they will give you a prescription for one year. Every year then you will need an exam done to get another year of birth control.

You should call them and ask them the specific questions you have because they will be more than willing to help you understand the whole process and everything. You should go to Planned Parenthood's website because you will find information on there as well as their phone number: http://plannedparenthood.org/

You don't have to get a pelvic/pap exam at Planned Parenthood. The guidelines established by the American Cancer Society state that you should have the exam once you turn 21, or 3 yrs after you become sexually active. If you tell them you don't want one, they won't do one. You will basically go there and talk to the nurse practitioner for a few minutes about birth control, what your options are, and how to practice safe sex (using condoms, etc). They will generally give you 12-16 months worth of pills, however, since it is your first time, they will probably only give you 3, and then tell you to come back for a re-check. If the pills are working well for you with no bad side effects, they'll give you more. If you had bad side effects, they'll just switch ou to a different brand of pill. The cost of the visit is usually on a sliding scale, which means it is dependent on your income level. You can go there even though you aren't 18, so don't worry about it. If you have specific questions, though, you should call and ask them directly. Good Luck!
