Midwifery career?!

Question: I am very interested in doing midwifery when i have finished school (1 more year) i was wondering what other midwives think of their career and what it is like, i have a broad idea of what i will have to do in this job description, and doing a lot of reading up on the topic so i know all the nitty gritty things that may occur. also how did you get to where you are now, what courses did you take?
anything will help
thanks

iv been a midwife for 3 years now, i absolutely love my job and wouldnt change it for the world, as a mum myself theres nothing like giving a newborn to its mum and dad i often feel overwhelmed and shed the odd tear with them its such a special moment for everyone in the room. however it is not always so happy, when you have to deliver a still born or a healthy pregnancy turns into a dilema, its those days that get you down when you know this poor lady will have all her house and equipment ready for baby and going home empty handed-it is the worst feeling in the world. i think to be a good midwife you have to be very caring, sensitive and form a bond with your ladies. its a brilliant career choice if you can handle extreme pressure and stay totally calm and collected. wish you all the best in your choice.

most midwives are nurse midwifes now. Since more restriciton has come on them because of claims of "practicing medicine without a license". Each state is different somehow. The main midwifery school I know about is in FL and is run by Sheri Daniels (sp?). She used to have a show on Discovery Health called House of Babies. I would check it out and read about what midwives say about the profession. Its a demanding job too because you never know when or how long a woman may be in labor. Good luck to you, that was what I wanted to to a few years ago and I might go back to considering it.
