Not only a third, but more can occur. The rate is supposedly 1 in 50 females and 1 in 100 men.
Supernumery nipples (and the usual two) are the result of a particular gene and most nipples follow a 'milk line' similar to that seen in other mammals.
There is even a case (not sure if it is true) of a nipple having formed on the sole of a person's foot!
i know one guy who does, its looks more like a mole but it has some specific name, its definatly a nipple though
