Doc says that I have 5 cysts in my left ovary....?!

Question: He said that he would put me on Birth Control so that they can get smaller. In 3 months I will go back in to see how they are.

My aunt said that it is because of lack of sex. Could that be true?

Why did your doc tell you that you had cyst?

Why did your doc tell you that you had cyst?

No, it's not because of lack of sex. I wonder where she got that one from.

You get an ovarian cyst when a follicle, which is the little pocket in which an egg develops, fills with fluid. Everybody who ovulates develops functional cysts that shrink back down after ovulation takes place... usually only one at a time would show up on ultrasound. If the doc wants you to go on b.c., he might think that your cysts are corpus luteum cysts... which happen when a functional cyst doesn't disappear after ovulation. The b.c. will stop you from ovulating so you will quit developing these, and possibly shrink the existing ones.

95% of these cysts are benign (although they can still be painful!). The causes vary a lot, and at your followup exam feel free to ask the doctor what you think your particular issue may be.

I have cysts in my left one because of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. You might see if they checked you for that (they are generally blood tests and ultrasounds). Unfortunately there are doctors who are clueless on this condition, but it needs to be tested. Now, just because you have a few cysts doesn't mean that's what it is, but it's worth checking out if they haven't.

Having sex or not has nothing to do with cysts.

What did your Dr. say?

Cysts are due to hormones, not from lack of sex. Your aunt is very wrong.

Birth control pills do not get rid of cysts. They have to be removed or they sometimes go away on their own. I had cysts even on the pill.
Get a second opinion from another gyn - preferably female.
