Benefits and side effects of birth control?!

Question: I'm 14 and so far not sexually active (just above the waist for me) and I want to know benefits of birth control and some side effects...if you're not having sex. I know some people take it to shorten periods, etc. Any answers?

Birth control pills are way too harsh on your system to be using it other than for birth control or regulating periods. I used to be on the pill for years and I always laughed at the women who said you shouldn't be on it. That was until things started screwing up in my body. I was on Yaz for about a year and a half with no problems. Then all of a sudden I started getting inner ear issues. Then I started breaking out into a rash all over my body. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I never suspected the Yaz, because I had done fine on it for so long. But, immediately after I stopped taking Yaz, all my problems went away. I mean immediately. It was crazy. So, do your body a favor and stay off the birth control until you absolutely need it. Our bodies don't like being on medication, and they don't work at their optimal levels. Good luck to you.

predictable periods, lighter periods, better skin (clearer), sometimes less cramps, larger breasts...

It depends on the pill for the side effects. I had (and know several people that had) terrible side effects on Ortho Tricyclean Lo...such as weight gain, upset stomach, hair loss, dizziness, etc. I haven't had any side effects on Yaz. So that's a matter of discussion with your doctor and often trial and error.

As for the benefits, it regulates the irregular. So, before had no idea when I was going to start (or how often a month), now I know the day. Also, some people take it because they have other conditions, so they use it to regulate hormones. Often PMS is lessened and periods are shorter.

You should discuss the benefits and risks with your parents and doctor to determine if birth control is right for your situation.

I've been on it since I was 13. It does shorten your periods and the first time you take it you sometimes spot. If you're a smoker or have a risk of blood clots that is the big side effect but if you're not predisposed to that I wouldn't worry. I'm 21 now and I have no problem with it I just take it every morning and forget it.

If you're having problems with your period it worked wonders for me.

If ur NOT having sex, I would lay off the BC until u start, UNLESS ur cycles are irregular. I'm 22 and I've been using the Nuva ring for two years. It's a once a month deal (very convenient, predictable periods that YOU control and brings ur periods if u don't have them...and I didn't) that I like. Some of the side effects can be annoying, (acne, bad cramps at THAT time, and breast tenderness) but if you want full info go to nuvaring.com I really do like the ring, but as i stated, if ur not having sex, you might want to wait...and I DO recommend waiting lol!

Benefits (other than no pregnancies)
*shorter periods
*less cramps (except I didn't have any before so for me it worse :S)
*bigger boobs (sometimes)
*clear skin
*complete regularity of periods (why I went on it in the first place)
*no more pms
Thats all I can think of for now

Side effects
*mood swings to start with
*nausa
*weight gain (generally just boobs though)
*all I can think of
