First appt. with the gyno next week. What to expect?!

Question: I'm a little nervous for my appointment. I've never had sex and I'm afraid it will be painful. What should I expect?

The doctor should examine your breast, which will require him/her to touch them and feel for lumps and abnormalities.

They will insert a finger or two into your vagina and press on your abdomen at the same time to make sure everything feels ok there, and they may even have to insert a finger into your rectum, to make sure things feel ok from that angle as well.

As far as the pap goes, it can be a bit scary. They will have you lie back, put your feet in the stirrups, and scoot as far down to the end of the table as you can. The doctor will insert a speculum, which kind of looks like a duck bill into the opening of your vagina. This is so that your vagina remains open so that the doctor can look inside and get samples that he/she needs. For me, its the most uncomfortable part. The instrument itself doesnt bother me, but it does have a screw like feature on it that they tighten to cause the speculum to remain open. That process is almost like nails on a chalkboard for me. It doesnt hurt, I just dont like it.

Next the doctor will sweep across your cervix, collecting samples of cells to make sure everything is ok. This may be a little uncomfortable and afterwards you may experience some cramping and light bleeding, but thats normal.

I've found a webpage that explains what happens....I will share it and hope it helps.

Just prepare to feel a little uncomfortable, since it is your first time, all of yourself will be exposed and that makes for an uneasy feeling. But, eventually you will get used to that and it wont be as big of a deal.

Best of luck to you.

it wont be painful. your doc will just check you out. Dont worry. If it hurt no woman would go.

Basically, expect to be taken out of your comfort zone.
