It's important to change your pad or tampon every few hours so that the blood doesn't spoil and give you an infection. I don't recommend that young girls use tampons. First, it can break your hymen, and it's very nice to preserve that until you are married. Second, it can be uncomfortable as you will be small in your vagina. Third, it's too easy to forget and leave it in too long, especially if you're not bleeding heavily. Leaving it in too long can lead to TSS (Toxic Shock Syndrome) which is an infection that can send your body into shock and lead to serious ilness and possibly death.

I didn't mean to scare you as having your period is normal and healthy. But, just make sure you change your pad frequently and consider not using tampons.

Also, make sure you get plenty of iron now that you will be losing blood every month. Dark green veggies like spinach and brocolli are good sources, as are oysters and red meat. Ask your mom if you can have a daily multivitamin with iron. Most have 18 mg. of iron. Don't take more than one a day as iron can be toxic if you take too much.

Welcome to womanhood. Now, remember that it's very quick and easy to get pregnant. Your body is cabable of that, but you have a full life ahead of you and many wonderful possibilities that you don't even know about. You can go to college and even graduate school, have a fun and exciting career, travel, meet interesting people etc. But, if you get pregnant when you are young or get a disease which is very easy to do even with "nice" boys, your future could go down the toilet with your bloody pads. Don't let anyone steal that from you by using you for their pleasure.

I am the mom of a teenage boy, and he's a great kid, so don't take this wrong, but there are teenage boys who will charm you and tell you they love you, especially older boys who prey on younger teenage girls. They say what you want to year and then take advantage of you, leaving you when you get pregnant. Just say "No," and you' won't regret it. Wait till you're married.

your cycle will come every 28 days or so (it's usually slightly different for every girl, like mine comes every 26 days). it might be easier to start out with pads until you get on a more regular schedule, then switch to tampons. oh, and if you get cramps, ibuprofen works wonders.

I would buy Always Overnight Pads...it gives you extra protection so your period does not leak in places it shouldn't. Do not use tampons when your period is heavy unless you have to..if you leave them in for too long you risk your period leaking through the tampon. Also....stay clean...your period smells after awhile and it's not a nice smell. The always fresh pads are nice b/c it comes with a nice smelling wipe. Sometimes I wear two pads when I go to sleep so it does not leak. I don't mean two pads on top of each other either. I don't know about you...but my period is SO heavy the first few days....and when I go to sleep...I put one in the regular spot in my underwear....and then I put one behind it....Don't wear thongs when you have your period either...regardless of whether or not it's heavy or light...if it leaks...you are in trouble.

"Real" actually gave you a really good answer...I'm a little older than you (I'm 20) and all of the things "Real" has said is really good live and learn advice...Don't be fooled by the older boys who tell you they love you...be a smart young girl...and stay away from boys for awhile and focus on your career and future. I didn't use tampons until I became sexually active....I used them back when I was in high school....but now that I'm slightly older I realized they are a pain in the butt. If you ever need to talk you can always e-mail me!

i agree with the girl above me...as well as with the cramps aleve works just as well....and you are young so you may skip your periods until you get yourelf regulated....it's perfectly normal....

Well in the beginning, you will be a bit heavy, so when you sleep it might leak thru your underwear and onto your bed sheets or pants. To prevent this from happening, sleep with a folded blanket under your lower back / butt area. You should also use always heavy flow overnight, or long and heavy pads to prevent any accidents. You should take a shower twice a day to prevent any odors. Hope I helped. :)

What a coincedence I just started mine in late December!

Here are a few pointers and facts for you:

* WHen you first begin it may be a little irregular, so don't be alarmed! It may be light, heavy, spotted, ect. It may hurt it may not. Just because you are having certain symptoms your first time does not mean your period will always be this way! ALso your scheduling may be a little off. I only had it for two days my first time! You may get it again in a month or it could come again sooner or later. Thats okay it is normal! Do not be alarmed!

* Once you get a "normal" routine down and you can predict around when you will have your period again , you need to keep track of it! Create a calandar so you won't be caught by suprise the next time!

* Always carry a pad, panty liners, or tampons with you if you will be away from home for awhile! SOmetimes you may forget your period is coming or because you are just beggining it may catch you by suprise! You always want to be prepared!
If you ever truly forget your new girl items ask other girls if they have something you can borrow, they will be glad to help! (ESPECIALLY ADULT WOMEN) If worse comes to worse and you are in desperate need of something use papertowels, toliet paper or even a sock! Yes a sock really will work if worse comes to worse!

*Always have motrin for that special time of month! Motrin is the biggest, best cramp reliever. Not tylonol, MOTRIN! (:
ALso warm baths will help with cramps.

* You may even notice some signs when you are about to recieve your "special friend" again. You may tend to get more moody, breakout (sometimes in certain areas), or even have a clearish substance come out of your special girl spot.

Good luck and welcome to womanhood!

(:

your period will be irregular tell your about 20. which means u wont get ur period every 28 to 30 days like u will when ur older. so u may get ur periods 2 weeks apart up to 2 months apart. which is fine. so dont freak out if ur late or early.

Don't swim without a tampon
