No one contraceptive is 100% effective, except abstinance. Birth control pills will help keep you from getting pregnant, but they are no gaurantee. Use condoms as well, as this will not only help prevent pregnancy, but will also reduce the risk of STDs.
When it boils down to it though, if you are not married, you may as well wait. Sex is a wonderful thing when done with your spouse. Outside of marriage it often complicates life and relationships. It can breed insecurity in future relationships and can produce guilt or resentment in your current relationship (sometimes you or your partner might think it is only about the sex). And don't worry, you won't die if you don't have sex. It is not a prerequisite for having a romantic relationship. Of course I'm saying this just assuming that you are not already married! If you are, then have fun with it! If you are in a monogamous relationship and you don't have an STD you probably won't get one. But condoms used with birth control pills or with some other combination of contraceptives are usually highly effective at preventing pregnancy. But remember, babies aren't the end of the world. They are a lot of fun and can add more to your life than you ever thought possible.
Hope this helps!
