My period started the day of my exam!! B/c my mom had made the apt while I was away at college & she didn't know it'd be a bad week...but she wouldn't let me cancel it. I started right as the exam began! But the doctor said after he'd done so many deliveries & exams for so many years, not to worry, that it's not a problem & he's used to it.

So really if it's more convenient time-wise, just go then. But let me warn you, they have to dry off the blood (for a proper pap) & keep the speculum open awhile to do so. It HURTS when they dry you off, I was like oh my god but he didn't stop. And this is coming from someone who's used to tampons & had had sex before. Still, it goes quickly & then you're done.

Mine told me that she'd prefer for a reschedule, since the stuff can get in the way of a proper exam and pap.

I'd call them and ask what's the best thing to do. I had a pap smear taken while I was spotting. Just call to be sure.

Probably they'll want you to reschedule, although not knowing your specific doc or health situation I can't say for sure. It's difficult to get useful Pap results from a menstruating woman. Call and ask... you certainly won't be the first patient with this issue.

If you are out of your birth control, the doc will often prescribe a single month's worth so that you can continue on it while waiting for your new appointment.
