Copper IUD birth control???!

Question: I want to get a copper IUD (the one w/out hormones), and was really happy with everything I've heard so far, and I fit all of the criteria. Then I found out that some one close to me got pregnant within 2 months of getting one, and it freaked me out a little. I wouldn't mind another child, but I heard that it is dangerous while leaving the UTI in or taking it out during pregnancy. Has anyone used this kind of bc? Any likes or dislikes??? Things I should know or consider? Thanks:)

Ok for one, you DO get your period normally with Paragard. They last for 10 years not 5. Ive had one for almost 2 years and I dont have anything negative to say about it except that my periods are heavier and last longer. Its nice to not worry about taking a pill everyday or making an appointment to get a shot every 3 months. Of course, as with anything else in the world, there are risks involved. I say go for it and good luck!

Also, why would you be more prone to urinary tract infections? The IUD is placed inside your uterus, not your bladder.......some people need to think before they speak/type.

Check out this website, it has a lot of helpful information.

I have this IUD. It is amazing. Perfect for me. I used condoms with my boyfriend until we both got tested and now I just rely on the IUD for birth control. It made my periods a little more painful but that isnt saying much since they were an average of 2-3 days to begin with, now I have a more normal period.

On the other hand, my mom had an IUD and got pregnant twice in a year. It was not good for her because her cervix is oddly shaped and since she has already had two kids it is larger than mine. Also, it didn't work to begin with, it was put in incorrectly due to her odd condition. It was not the thing for her.

Get the one without the hormones if you decide to get one at all! I highly recommend it, it's working great for me.

**EDIT**ALSO! I have had it for two years, no problems. The removal of the uterus is WORST CASE SCENARIO. Make sure you have a good doctor, and don't skimp. It is the best birth control for someone who cant afford to get pills every month and doesn't want the inconvenience of a daily, weekly, or even monthly committment! so easy.

**EDIT AGAIN** Someone said below my question that they like to get their period every month. The copper IUD allows you to have your period every month. I don't know what they're talking about, they were implying that you dont get your period with the IUD. You would know you are pregnant the moment you miss your period, same as if you didn't have the IUD.

Ever since I was old enough to know about this, I've heard nothing good about it. Women losing their uterus, needing surgery to remove it as it implanted in the uterus. Scarring of the uterus so as to not be able to get pregnant.
Personally I really liked the diaphragm a lot. It's like a condom for women. You go to your doctor to be fitted, and instruct you on the use. If you use it properly every time, it works as well as the pill. If periods is an issue for sex, the nice thing is that the diaphragm hold blood back for quite a while. Just make sure you follow the directions to the T.
peace

I wasn't really into the IUD. I heard a woman is more at risk for getting Urinary Tract Infections which can be very painful. To me, IUDs are for someone who isn't looking to get pregnant for a long time. I'm talking five years. I also think that you can get pregnant while using a IUD and not even know it for a while. To me, that just sounds unstable. With all birth control, there is a chance of pregnancy but you need to find which is good for you. I've tried many pills and they just made me sick all the time. Then I found the NuvaRing. And getting my period every month is for me to make sure that I'm not pregnant. That's something you're not going to get with the IUD. Good luck with everything!

I got the copper iud in May 07 and I love it. Generally it's really hard to get pregnant with one inside of you, unless you don't get measured properly before insertion. It's very important to find a good doctor. Usually if you get pregnant with an iud in, it's ectopic (in the tube) so it's hard to save a pregnancy like that.

So for me the goods were: not having to take the pill everyday, having a normal period, supersized sex drive, and no hormones!!

Bads: Bad cramping for the first month, heavier than usual periods now.

Don't listen to all the horror stories though, most women who wind up unfertile do so because they get pid, which usually only happens if you have multiple partners.
