Metformin and weight loss?!

Question: i've been diagnosed with PCOS and have been taking metformin for the past 6 months. My doc said i would lose weight on it, but i haven't noticed much difference. He just increased my dosage to 1000mg 2x a day. I'm overweight and have depression so i'm really hoping this will help. i'd love to hear some success stories. i'm feeling pretty hopeless at this point.

and yes, i'm on meds for the depression and seeing a dietician.

I take metformin 500mg 3 times a day.

I have been taking it for about 3 months and have lost 27 pounds.

I think the medication has helped, but since being diagnosed, I decided to change my life. I dont want the heart disease, the diabetes and other problems that can happen if I continue to have my weight up and not take care of things.

I have cut out a lot of sugars and enriched items.

i also have pcos and i am overweight
my doctor also said i will loose wight while taking metformin
i have not seen any wieght lose at this time but i am exercising and am starting to feel better so i think my weight is starting to go down

hope you feel better!!
God Bless!

Metformin is a drug for diabetes. You were prescribed it because diabetes sometimes develops when you have PCOS. It's a protective measure, and there is something in it that helps with PCOS. Anyway, Metformin commonly causes diabetics to gain weight. Some depression meds can also make you gain weight.

Something else to keep in mind, a lot of women who have PCOS also have thyroid problems. That too can make it really hard to maintain a healthy body weight.

I suggest talking and working closely with the dietitian for a good plan of loosing weight. Do what ever they say. If you still have problems, bring it up with your doctor.

EDIT- Depending on what your thyroid medication is, that can also potentally make it very hard to loose weight too. All you can really do to loose weight is eat sensibly, and exercise enough to get your heart rate up 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week.
