Has anyone used Depo-Provera Birth control?!

Question: I am interested in alternative forms of birth control as I have been taking the pill and find it hard to remember to take it daily. I am looking into depo provera shot and understand what it is and how it works. What i would like to know is how other people have found it, if they would reccomend it and if there was any side effects from using it?

I have, and I must advise you not to use Depo.

Find another form of BC. Seriously, I was on the shot for two years. I was on it for about a year before my sex drive died, my boobs were small and limp, and I became very moody. The only thing that made it better was switching to the pill, and it was a quick change too.

Another good reason to not use Depo is that it has been proven to contribute to serious bone density loss. When women are already at a risk for osteoperosis, why invite more trouble?

EDIT: BTW, I actually got off easy, I didn't gain any weight, which is rare. The other two girls I know that used depo both gained weight.. one quite severly.

Depo Provera is an injection that must be done every 13 weeks. If you leave it longer then you might get pregnant. Most common side effect is weight gain. This is because many women find their appetite increases. If you get this side effect, you will have to wait for the injection to wear off before it will stop.

There is also a risk of osteoporosis with this med.

the plus side is that you only have to do it every 13 weeks and you will likely not get your period at all while you are on it.

I used the depo shot for 7 years..... I loved it and am thinking about going back on it. my very first shot for a couple weeks my body kinda ached.... not bad just like after you have been sitting for awhile after a workout. after my 2nd shot i never had another period. it was wonderful. also since i was in a serious relationship we NEVER used a condom. so for me it was 100 percent effective. i went off of it last year because over the 7 years i kept slowly gaining weight. i workout 3 times a week but that last year i gained about 30 lbs. but now i have lost it all. I made sure that i drank milk or orange juice with calcium in it. since i dont have a history of osteoperosis in my family i was fine. I think its funny how people say they dont wanna take this because they dont want to gain weight. well i think having a baby would be worse. lol i actually had my friend who just had a baby she was still laying in the hospital bed and she had gained over 60lbs she just had a very difficult time giving birth said to me "i dont want depo cuz i dont want to gain weight." yeah i just laughed but i hope my experiance has helped you in making your decision. ..... oh one more thing was you dont have to remember to take a pill everyday at the exact same time.

I was on the depo off and on for several years. I liked it b/c I use to have bad cramps on my cycle when i was younger and enjoyed just not having a period every month. I have recently switched to the generic form of seasonale Quasense and now just have a cycle every 3 months.

i have been on it for 4 years and i think its the best kind of contraception out there like you i had a hard time remembering to take the pill and this way you only have to take it every 3 months but just make sure that you get it every 3 months on the day, when i first started on it my periods were a bit zig zaggy but it only lasted a few months then my period dissappered. i have heard of ppl putting on weight but i havnt, when you go see your doctor get them to make up a chart and everytime you go there get them to check your blood pressure and weight, thats what mine does. it also takes awhile to get out of your sytem so if u do want to have children it can take up to a year or more to get your period back it just depends how long you have been using it for. and i would suggest to get the needle in your bum as getting it in your arm really hurts.

I've never used it but my sister had a very bad experience. She had blinding headaches from the day after the injection and had to just live with them until it wore off. Personally I don't like any kind of depot injection as once it's in your body you are stuck with it.
I did use the pill but switched to Nuva Ring, you only have to remember to put it in once a month then take it out 3 weeks later. It has the advantage that if you do have any problem you can just take it out.
