Miscarriage questions....???!

Question: What generally causes a miscarriage?
What happens during a miscarriage?
What do you do after a miscarriage?
What exactly is a D & C and when do they do it, what do they do?
Thanks!

Causes: High alcohol consumption, drugs, heavy physical trauma, uterine or cervical problems, but most first trimester miscarriages are caused by chromosomal defects in the baby.
During: Your body expels the sac and uterine lining. There is often heavy bleeding accompanied by severe, contracting cramps.
A D&C (dialation and cutterage) is the scraping of the uterus to remove any and all material from the pregnancy. It is supposed to shorten the bleeding and lessen the cramps that would come with a natural miscarriage.
After, you check up with your doctor to make sure your hormone levels are going back to normal and everything is healing. You also deal with a heavy amount of emotional pain.

I hope you're not asking because you've suffered one. If so, you have my deepest sympathy.

There are probably hundreds of things that can cause a miscarriage, and many times a woman never finds out why it happened.

During a miscarriage, a woman will have a lot of cramping and bleeding, and this will vary depending on how far along she was.

After a miscarriage, you follow up with your doctor.

A D&C is a scraping of the uterus that's done to get rid of any tissue that the body isn't able to pass on its own. They will dilate your cervix and then scrape out the uterus. This isn't always done after a miscarriage, only if the body isn't able to pass everything on its own.

Miscarriage does not happen by cause, it just happens.
You cramp like labor, bleed and pass large clots.
A D&C is a procedure where the Dr scrapes your uterus to ensure that all tissue has been removed to prevent infection.

Doctors don't really know why miscarriage happens. The theory is, the egg isn't developing properly and something is wrong genetically. You start to bleed and cramping is horrible. You start to lose the tissue from the uterus. A D&C is when they "scrape" the inside of the uterus and it "cleans" everything out so the heavy bleeding will stop and there is nothing left that could become an infection or cause other problems. It creates a healthy new lining of the uterus. You shouldn't have sex for about 6 weeks after a misscarriage and D&C. Not sure how to answer "what do you do after".

The most common cause of miscarriage is a genetic abnormality in the fetus incompatible with life. Usually this is a total fluke. Every now and then you'll get a miscarriage due to uterine abnormalities, clotting or genetic issues in the mom, inherited genetic things, or trauma, but usually it's just a fluke. It's quite common... about 25% of pregnancies that get to the point where the mom misses a period end in miscarriage.

During a miscarriage, the uterus expels the fetus and placenta. There's details involved but that's basically it. There's some pain and bleeding, since the cervix must dilate to get everything out.

After miscarriage, you should visit your doctor to make sure your body has gotten rid of everything. You generally don't want to try to conceive again for at least six weeks, or more on recommendation of your physician. You will probably be advised to abstain from sex for a while too, until you are healed up.

A D&C is short for Dilation and Curettage. This is a procedure done to get rid of any thing your uterus did not naturally expel. They put you under general anaesthesia, dilate the cervix, and gently scrape the lining of the uterus with a thing called a currette to get off any leftover tissue.

Miscarriages happen for many many different reasons, and the two responders who said their is no cause & no known cause respectively are wrong...there is always a cause but sometimes medical practitioners can't always determine what it was. When I was learning medical genetics many years ago we learned then that 50% of all pregnancies end before a woman even knows she is pregnant...so that should give you an idea just how many things can lead to miscarriage.

The answers regarding D&C that you got were quite accurate although it is not always necessary after a miscarriage and most doctors these days actually try to avoid one as it can lead a great deal of scarring and negatively effect future pregnancies.

you'll get answers that say it's "genetic", or a "fluke", etc. or "No one really knows what causes miscarriages". My belief is yes, there are many possible causes, but mainly I blame lifestyles. Not eating healthily, even if you think you are, environmental damage, etc. etc. etc. But still it sometimes "just happens". Not much of an answer, sorry.

There is no answer to any one thing that causes a miscarriage. Sometimes they just happen. If you are going through one my heart goes out to you, I had one about 3 years ago. During a miscarriage - well depending on how far along you are, some women don't even know they had one. If you are furthur along and the baby is bigger then you may go into somewhat of a labor where you body is trying to get rid of it. I had a miscarriage at 10-11 weeks. I went in for my first ultrasound at 12 weeks and there was no heartbeat. I had no idea anything was even wrong. I had to go to the hospital the next day to do an internal ultrasound to see better and then I was told that I was having a miscarriage and that I could either wait for a few weeks (they will usually let you go a week or two) and let my body to it's thing or have a D&C done. I waited about a week and wasn' worried about getting an infection so I went in for the D&C. It is an outpatient surgery and the put you under local anestitia (sorry about spelling). They pretty much.. to make it simple.. go in and take everything out. I was sore afterwards and they gave me some tylenol 3 with codein to take care of the pain. I had my period for about 2 weeks and on the very last day I had a lot of clotting and bad cramps and after that everything went back to normal. It's a hard thing to deal with. Although I got pregnant again a year later and now have a beautiful 2. 5 year old little boy. Good luck with everything!
