When I went for my first cervical smear test why was it so painful?!

Question: My doctor tried to do a smear test, and she inserted the speculum ok but when she opened it the pain was horrific - a terrible stabbing pain deep inside me. She tried gently twice more, and the result was the same. She said maybe it was because my cervix "wasn't used to it" and stopped. She did an internal exam as well, and that didn't hurt at all. It didn't occur to me at the time, but the pain was identical to that which I get during sex. I know I need to have a smear done, as I first became sexually active 2 years ago, and as I have known nothing but pain during sex, I suspect something is not right seeing as this pain is the same during a smear. Has anyone experienced this before? I have Polycystic Ovaries Syndrome too, which might not be helping. I don't think I have vaginamus either because I felt quite relaxed during the exam & during sex, but I feel so stupid because this should just be a simple test and now I'm put off trying again.

Sounds to me that whoever did your smear didn't put enough lubricant on the speculum and perhaps used the wrong size. Yes speculum's come in different sizes and if one is too big it will hurt. Next time ask the doc to use the smallest size, and to lubricate well. If the internal examination didn't hurt the speculum shouldn't hurt either. You POC will have nothing at all to do with this. During sex why don't you try a bit of KY gel maybe this will ease the pain for you. Please go for another smear as this is important these things save lives. Good Luck

I find it always hurts, but has to be done. I think it is because you feel apprehensive and worried about having it done, i always do and i have had four children.

Do get the test's done for your own health sake your problem with your ovaries will cause you pain is the Dr going to send you for an ultra sound ?as this needs sorting out.you should not need to be in pain at all.

Yeah i had my first smear about a year and half ago an it hurt sooo bad it made me jump off the bed nearly. I'm not sure what could be causing pain threw sex my partners ex had this problem he thought that it could of been in the mind though cause she started to associate sex with pain so every time she would tense up.

Don't ever put off a smear test - I had an abnormal one and thankfully had laser treatment in time. You MUST go to a gynae and ask about the pain, it isn't normal. Even if you aren't relaxed, it isn't really that painful. And pain during sex isn't really normal either, unless you really can't relax. Go to a specialist - it will be something they can treat, trust me, these things normally are. You will wonder why you left it so long. Good luck, you'll be fine. xx

Yeah i totally had that experience for my first pap smear aswell it was horrible! I had no abnormalities though and for the second one it hurt just as bad. I really hate going for them now and will avoid them if possible, because i just hate pain!
The doctor says it shouldnt hurt at all, which didnt ease my mind at all. I think it has to do with personal experience .Everyone responds differently!
