Had pap smear, high white blood cell count found?!

Question: I had a pap smear done and my doctor said I might have an infection, but she wasn't totally sure of what it could be. What else could be wrong?

A high white blood cell count is almost always an indication of an infection, nothing else. I hope you're going back in to your doctor to have a culture done. That's the only way to know for sure, and you'll get your results in a couple of days.

You should also ask to have a vaginal gram stain performed (which can be done on the same swab they get for the culture). A culture will only indicate what sorts of live bacteria you have growing, but with bacterial vaginosis, you can actually be lacking the good bacteria, and that won't show up on a culture, but it will with a gram stain.

You will likely need some sort of antibiotics, but you really should have a culture done first. There are two main types of bacteria (gram positive and gram negative), and individul antibiotics will work on one or the other. If your culture comes back positive, a sensitivites will be performed to find out which antibiotic is going to work best for you.
