What absorbency are you using?
Try starting with Tampax Pearl Lites. Its the lowest absorbency, and its a plastic applicator. If you need to, use some lube on the tip of the tampon to assist you.
The instructions on the pamphlet will help you. Make sure you spread your legs wide, use a mirror if you need to.
Is this your first time? If so, use a pad for a bit. Just get used to it before you start using tampons.

At the beginning of my periods I usually double up meaning tampon and pad because sometimes it gets really "heavy". The tampon box has directions, it's fairly easy to follow. It's basically insert, push up, then pull the plastic out.
Stay away from caffeine and dairy when on your period because and it can intensify the pain of the cramps.
just read the directions on the box--they are usually easy to follow. when i have cramps i drink fruit juices to get rid of them. [i dont kno how it works but it does]
gosh ur lucky (i started when i was 10) I would just use pads at first and get used 2 ur period b4 using tampons.
