Severe period pains should always be investigated to check for a treatable cause. As a rough guide, if you've had severe period pain (known as dysmenorrhoea) since around the time your periods first started, it's less likely a particular cause will be found.

There are exceptions to this. Conditions such as endometriosis can sometimes cause severe pain from an early age (although the pain typically gets worse as the disease does more damage with each monthly cycle). Other causes include fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease and sometimes a narrowing of the cervix. Bear in mind, though, that period pains are rarely a sign of disease, especially in younger women.

I got my period when I was 13 and have always had my period for a full 7 days with heavy bleeding and clotting. I thought that it would eventually get better as I got older, but for me in the past probably 2-3 years it has become unbearable. I'm 26 now and still I experience bad period pain and cramping (although not as bad as before my surgery). I went from doctor to doctor to doctor and finally met a great gynaecologist that was willing to listen to me and care enough to recommend I have a laparoscopy to have a look inside my pelvis. I had the laparoscopy late last year that diagnosed me with endometriosis.

If the pain interferes with your life, preventing you from working and coping with daily tasks, I would recommend you definitely consult with a doctor/gynaecologist for further evaluation.

Good luck :)

If it's in your back, it could be endometriosis. You should ask your gyno about it. It can cause all of those symptoms. Go to the gyno as soon as you can! Tell her all of your symptoms aned everything you've taken.

I hope you feel better!

Your symptoms sound like mine used to be. I had Endometriosis, a very severe case. I'm so sorry that you have seen so many doctors that didn't help you. I did that too. Check out The Endometriosis Association. They have a great book that helped to change my life for the better. It's called Overcoming Endometriosis, written by Mary Lou Ballweg. There are a lot of support groups around the USA and even International. They have the resources to help you find a knowledgeable doctor in your area. Check 'em out. I know they can help you. They helped me.

If you don't plan to have any more children, I would suggest a hysterectomy. I know that it is a very serious decision, so I advise you to take time in making a decision. If the pain is just too unbearable, consider the option. Cramps are caused by the contraction of the uterus, and by having it removed you will do away with your pain. See a doctor to get details. Take care.
