I have a terrible fear of going to the ob-gyn, i this normal?!

Question: It's seem unbearably embarrassing!

Answers: It's seem unbearably embarrassing!

Yes it's normal... I guess we all do.
Don't worry, they don't know you personally. It's a job. They've done it millions of times before.

When you get an answer let me know. I get sick knowing I have to go. I haven't went in several years. And each time I make an appointment I don't show up!

if its your first or second time then yes.

You MUST do it. Its for your health

I don't enjoy going....I don't think many do..
I just try not to think about it when I am lying there and try to relax....at least it's only once a year and it doesn't last that long.

i went my first time last year (i was 20) and i was so nervous...but it wasnt THAT bad. it is a little embarrassing, but just remember the doctor has seen everything

it is embarrassing but, you have to go to protect your health. I always have hot flashes during the exam...... bite you lip and do it anyways.... it's for your own good :)

yah well it is sort of embaressing. no one likes doctors going down there
but its for your babys health.

Have you been before? Is this just an anxiety from what other people have told you?
It's a little bit of a personal violation feeling, but it's necessary. It gets easier every year especially if you always see the same doctor.

I used to be the same way. I didn't get my first pelvic exam until I was 27, and that was only because I was in the emergency room due to the very intense pain of an ovarian cyst bursting. fortunately for me, my nurse practitioner does pelvic exams and pap smears. I'm very comfortable with her. I now make it a point to get an exam every year. Besides, I like how my birth control (the patch) allows me to know when I'll get my period (mine used to be somewhat irregular before going on b.c.)
You just need to find an ob/gyn whom you'll feel comfortable with. Ask your mom or friends for recommendations.

I'm a guy, but I can relate to your fear, and I would say it's very normal. But it's for YOUR health. I had been putting off a prostate exam for years, because the idea of a guy ramming (yes, they are not gentle), but ramming his finger up my butt is very undignified, painful, and all around embarrassing. But Dan Fogelberg just died of prostate cancer, and I know these butt rammings could have saved his life, so I went. And now it's over, and it wasn't quite as bad as my mind built it up to be. Bottom line (no pun intended), these doctors have seen a million private parts, so just go, for your own health.

my first time going, i was scared and nervous but i knew that it was for my health and also for my now husband's health. especially if you plan on going on birth control you must have a pelvic done first.

just take a deep breath and tell the dr that you are seeing that it is your first time. they will tell you what is going on and try to be as gentle as possible. it is not embarrassing. if you rather, find a female dr that you know goes through the same thing. i found they are nicer than males in the field.

after awhile, you kind of get use to it. not saying they get easier but you get use to it.

also remember this, if you plan to have children one day, the ob/gyn is going to be your friend below for 9 months.
