No, I don't think that anorexia can ever truely be beaten... at least not with the treatment methods that are currently being used.

Yes, there is councelling, in both a group setting and private setting, but what more is that going to do than to let them know that they have someone to talk to and make them feel comfortable? The people that the anorexic talks to will never make him or her feel bad purposely because they fear that that will either aggrivate the anorexia or cause other mental problems in the patient, such as depression.

In order to treat anorexia and truely "beat" it, you would most likely have to brainwash the sufferer or change his or her way of thinking totally in order to combat the disorder.

However, I think that most people would argue that it would not be ethical to totally deplete one's brain of everything they've ever known, thought, or experienced, so for the time being, there isn't a cure/way to beat it.

Since recent studies have shown that anorexia may have genetic links, even the brainwashing may not be a totally affective way of helping the individual.

Unless there is a majour scientific, biological, medical, and/or technological breakthrough that is also ETHICAL and able to help people with anorexia and similar disorders, we will have to fight it the best we know how.

I wish you and your friend the best of luck. For the time being, the most you can do would be to pray and just be there for her.

I hope I was able to help

it can be beat, but the whole illness has to be treated, not just the symptoms.

Nicole Ritchie beat it

she has problems. Get her to see a dietitian or a psychiatrist

By some of the people some of the time, but not by all of the people all of the time.

yes it can.... unless you have a weak mind.

Yes, by people who aren't useless. A retarded monkey could figure out that not eating is making them unhealthy, and counter it by doing the miracle cure, EATING! Sadly, anorexic girls have intellects that simply don't match up to those of retarded monkeys, so they can't seem to make the connection.

No.

Anorexic people teach themselves to be repulsed by the idea of food. Just because an anorexic person gets treatment (ie someone watching what they eat and making sure they eat) doesn't mean they get over this repulsion. it just means they have to choose whether to keep up appearances or let in to that learned bad habit.

It certainly can be overcome but it is at the choice of the victim. Unfortunately, if an anorexic person does not want to get better, they cannot get better.

I had a friend that would put on pounds during hospital visits because they would tube feed her etc. but she, 6+ years later is still battling back and forth.

i'm 5.9 feet yet 55kg.... but i don't have anorexia,i just can't put on weight.something predetermined by genes.

it can be beaten, but only with professional medical help as well as psychological support of the environment and a psychologist. help her feel confident about herself looking good when she eats. she might feel fat - convince her she looks great. good luck

Your friend will battle with this everyday and will have to make herself eat no one can do this for her .

i beat it........... you ought to see my fat @ss! lol

Yes, it can be beaten but it's a very complex disorder and needs intensive treatment by highly trained professionals. It usually stems from bad body image, abuse or neglect (usually these people have really poor self esteem and feel out of control with everything else).

But yes, it's been done, people do get through it and recover. But don't let your friend slip, be there for her as much as you can, encourage her to keep getting better. Lots of love and support is what they need.

It's unlike any other type of physiological disease. It can be treated but my addiction psychiatrist told me it's without a doubt the hardest to treat. The way he explained it is it's like even if they eat the presence of a toilet (to throw up in) is equivalent of putting a shot of heroin in an addicts arm and then telling them not to inject it. As a recovering addict that really put things in perspective for me, cause there is no way you can do that to an addict and expect them to say no.It is treatable through group and individual therapy.

I can understand what the girl above me is saying, I'm not sure about groups for anorexia but groups like Narcotics Anonymous teach you how to find peace and happiness within yourself finding a power greater than your self wether it be god or the group or whatever and conveying that message to others by helping them, only then can you truly be free from your addiction. I think from my experience that all physiological illness is related to that person just not liking them self and unhappiness.

I feel really sorry for those people.

For a person to stop being anorexic is very hard, but they can achieve it. For anorexia to be beaten I don't think that will ever be achieved because the media persuades more young people into becoming anorexic, not in the exact words but thats the message that they send. Kisses xxxx.

With the "extre-melt" thin that she is, one would think that she could "melt extra" fat away as easily as she put it on . . . So, I can understand that.
