It may take a couple months for fertility to get to pre-pill levels, but at six months, there is no difference between women who took the pill and who didn't in regards to their fertility.

Keep in mind that it takes some people a long time to get pregnant. Like fertility specialists usually say that they don't think you have a problem until you have tried for a year. And about 10% of couples have fertility issues. So despite all the warnings about how you need to use birth control EVERY time you have sex, it is really amazing how hard it can be to get pregnant when you really want to. So the people you were talking about may not have been trying long enough or they were in that 10% who really didn't need to take the pill.

BTW, this is specific to the pill. With the IUD for example, fertility returns as soon as the IUD is take out.
