First of all your old enough to go get birth control on your own.... Its great that you want to share this info with your mom and if you think she'll handle it well go ahead. The fact that you are being RESPONSIBLE is a great step in adult hood.... If you have never had an exam, one will be performed. Its not that big of a deal, just a little embarassing the first time ( trust me once you get preg. and have kids its like everyone and their neighbor has been there.) Good luck and don't be afraid to ask questions.

Well you can tell your mother the truth, or you can tell her you have been suffering terrible period pains or something whilst at college and you want to get it for that. If you decide to go the truth route, introduce the idea you have a boyfriend, you have talked about sleeping together etc- make it sound well thought out and adult to adult.

As for exams, in the UK, they just ask you about your family history and take your blood pressure. I believe in the US you have to have a smear test too (which really is no problem).

If you're 19 you should have been to see a gynocologist by now. You should get an exam so the doctor knows what is best for you. And, because you're 19 you may not need your parents permission. But, you should discuss it with your Mom and have her go with you. The exam is a little uncomfortable, but necessary. and having your Mom out in the waiting room might make you feel more comfortable

yes you do need an exam! but why would u tell ur mom ur 19 you can get it by ur self and the exam is not that bad its a little cold buts its fast!!! =] good luck

well, only if you want to.
Your 19, (if your over 16) you can make an appointment with the doctor yourself and talk to the doctor about birth control.
yes, you will need to get an exam. It kind of hurts, but its only a short while

Just be honest with your mother!... You are a young women after all, and old enough to get on it your self! So when you go to the doctors, he/she will probably just ask you a few simple questions and then recommend a type of pill that is suitable for you! Oh and no you don't need any kind of exam before you get on the pill!

Unless you have reason to think your mom will freak out, just say, "Mom, I was thinking about going on the pill. Can you help me get an appointment?" If a lie is necessary, say, "Mom, I've been having some issues with my periods. I'd like to go see a gynecologist." I have never been to a gynecologist who didn't try to put me on the pill, so that'll get you in the door. Even if you have to lie to your mom, plz be honest with the doc. They cannot discuss your care with your mother.

That said, at age 19, unless you are relying on your family's insurance there's really no reason to involve your mom at all. You can just as easily go to a local doctor. If you go to a large school you can make an appointment with the campus health service, or if you're at a smaller or religious school, you can call up a local Planned Parenthood or women's health center.

The exam is quick and is really important if you're planning on having sex, since it's pretty much the best way to detect cervical cancer... which is highly treatable when caught early, but will kill you dead if left too long. The doctor inserts a small device called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum gently pushes the sides of your vagina apart so that the doctor can look to see if you have any abnormal growths, and use a big q-tip like swab to collect a sample of the cells from your cervix. It takes less than five minutes and is generally uncomfortable and pinchy but not painful. Let the doc know you've never had one so they know to be gentle.

You do not *have* to get a pelvic exam to get the pill. Places like Planned Parenthood don't insist on it, whereas most OBGYNs do. You *have* to have your blood pressure taken to make sure the pill won't harm you. They do the pelvic since they assume pill=sex=possible exposure to HPV and other STDs. Just go ahead and do it... it's an important part of health for a sexually active woman.

From my own experience at 19 you do not need your parents permission to get birth control and if you are in college and one of them have insurance on you, you most likely have a card to go if you suddenly start feeling sick right? Just go to local planned parenthood and they go by your income so that may be $15-$20 now adays. But if you want to talk to your mom about sex than I think that is a good idea too because those that give you tips are not always your friend and want to see what you do with the information they give you. I was not able to talk to my mom and had to talk to my older cousins(her age). I have 3 boys and 1 girl and I tell my daughter there is nothing that she should be scared to come and tell me. If that sucker tells you "You don't love me if you want to use a condom" tell him to take a FLYING LEAP!!!! It is too dangerous out here now days and you are headed in the right direction to a career and don't let anyone mess that up for you. A pap smear is not so bad and the doctor will talk you through it and if you see he is not using heated forceps ask him to warm it. You will be alright! Take a close cousin with you that is what I did when I got a diaphram at 17.

try going to a planned parenthood clinic, you dont need an adult, plus its very low cost. they give exams and then u can get birth control, its very easy!

at 19, you are old enough to go by yourself. you don't always need an exam especially if there is nothing wrong, you have a steady partner...etc
