Basal temp is a slight increase in body temperature which indicates ovulation. You need a special thermometer for this. You can get a Basal thermometer at a pharmacy. It is a special, more accurate thermometer. You need to take your temperature right after you wake up in the morning - and before you get out of bed. You need to take your temp every morning for a while to get a base line of what your normal temp is, so that you know what the temp increase is when it happens. There should be paperwork with the thermometer that will explain how to use it and a chart to guide you. If there isn't, talk to your doctor, and ask for something to help you.
Taking clomid should make you ovulate since it is a fertility drug. If you are the one that asked what the long term effects of clomid are, you can ask your doctor, pharmacist, or go on line to research the drug. Or, maybe go to the library to get a book on drugs to research it. I can't help you with that, my books only state what the acute effects are.
If you want, you can email me if you think that I might be able to help with any other questions.

Yes, this is supposed to stimulate ovulation. A basal temp is a temp taken each day before you get out of bed. I find this book to be very helpful: "Taking Charge of your fertility."
Good Luck

Basal body temperature is the body temperature immediately after awakening and before any physical activity has been undertaken. In women, ovulation causes an increase of one-half to one degree Fahrenheit (one-quarter to one-half degree Celsius) in basal body temperature (BBT). Monitoring of BBTs is one way of estimating the day of ovulation.
