I think your doctor meant it would regulate your cycle! That means your body gets used to bleeding once a month and short courses of the birth control (generally about 3 months) can encourage the body to have more regular periods. But whilst you are on the pills, you won't ovulate or get pregnant.

You aren't supposed to ovulate while you are on the pill. If you stop taking it you should start again, but if you have an irregular cycle, it's difficult to tell when you would ovulate.

You can get pregnant ANY TIME you have sex. That includes being on the pill, patch, shot, ring, condoms, etc.

Doctors will tell you to use condoms for at least two weeks when you start taking pills, and some even say to use condoms for the first pill pack.

Even after that first pack, and using the pills as prescribed, you are ONLY 99% protected. Which means, you can get pregnant. NOTHING is 100% except for abstinence.

You shouldn't ovulate on the pill HOWEVER since people DO get pregnant on the pill, that is not always the case.
