Starting birth control?!

Question: so i just got birth control pills.... my doctor told me to start taking them 3 days into my period so that i most likely wont get spotting. but ive heard to start it on the first day also....

what day is a good day.

oh yeah and i'm going on a cruise starting feb 22. and i wanted to use the pill so that i can tweak it so i wont get my period on the cruise....will this affect the effectiveness of not getting pregnant?

Technically you can start whenever you want. If you don't wait until the sunday or 3rd day after you period and start right away, use a condom during sex for the first week, after that you're good to go. And if you dont want to get your period while you're on the cruise, just skip the week of inactive pills (usually white or a different color than the rest of the pack) and go straight into a new pack. That way you'll skip your period for that month all together.

You can start the first day of your period if you would like, or the first Sunday after your period starts. Just use the stickers that come with the pack to make sure the days line up. When you start the pill will determine when you get your period. Starting on Sunday would mean your period would come during the week. Starting about mid-week would mean your period would come over the weekend. You can use the pill to stop your period by not taking the week off the active pills at the end of the pack. If you go right from the three weeks of active pills in one pack, to the active pills in the next pack, you will skip your period for that month. Check with your doctor to make sure it is OK for you to be doing that.

Take them the first sunday after your period, unless your period starts on sunday, in that case take it then. Although I would think that you would want to follow your doctor's orders.

As for getting pregnant, you need to be on the pill or at least 1 month, before you are protected for that. The pill does not protect you against STD's, so unless you know who you're gonna hook up with, bring condoms. You can get those at your local Health department, or planned parenthood center for free.

I hope this helps, and have fun on your cruise!
