Changed cells can be precursors to cancer and need to be removed. They are mostly commonly caused by unprotected sex that exposes you to HPV, although smoking also increases the risk of cellular changes. The procedure will indicate how extensive the cellular change is and let your practitioner know how aggressive your treatment (if any) will need to be.
