Question: I have had this chocolatety discharge lately. I don't know what it is. I am hoping someone out there can tell me what it is. The discharge ranges from a light brown color to a chocolate color. It's mostly chocolate. I am a 24 year old woman who has always had problems with my period and I also had a cyst on one of my ovaries. I don't know if this is a result of that or not. I know it's not an std because this has gone on for years even before I became sexually active. My husband and I are also in a monogamous marriage so I know it's not an std.

Sometimes women don't get rid of all the blood produced by their period and sometimes it comes out at the most inopportune moments. The reason it is brown is because it is old blood though. But definitely talk to your doctor about it.

The only way to find out for sure is if you go to a Gynecologist, don't take offense but you shouldn't gamble with your health. She will do a pap smear. Ask also to check for Gonorrhea, syphilis, sexually transmitted deceases. I don't know were you live but were I live in NJ they have Planned Parenthood you just walk in and you get a consultation. Don't wait any longer just go get it checked out. You can still get infections under there even if you're monogamous.
