Birth Control: Smoking while on Birth Control, chances of getting pregnant?!

Question: My Doctor told me that smoking while on Birth Control can counteract the contraceptive. What are the chances of getting pregnant if you still smoke and on Birth Control? How does it counteract the birth control by smoking? Much help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I've never heard anything about cigarette smoking decreasing the effects of birth control. Now cigarette smoking can increase the chances of blood clots, liver damage and heart attacks while being on birth control.

I don't think the chances of you getting pregnant is any higher than someone who doesn't smoke.

Agree with the first answer. I have always heard that smoking makes you a lot more likely to get blood clots, heart attacks, and other circulatory issues. And there are some drugs out there that counteract the pill, but I don't think nicotine is one of them.

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from all birth control use. This risk increases with age and heavy smoking (15 or more cigarettes per day) and is quite high in women over 35 years of age. Women who use birth control pills should be strongly advised not to smoke. More specifically, risks increase for heart attacks, blood clots, stroke, liver cancer, and gallbladder disease, although the risk is very small in healthy women without underlying risk factors.

I wouldnt smoke if i was you....why waste ur money on something that makes u sick day by day when i can save up the money and use it for something way better than that...

Smoking while on hormonal contraception does not make you more likely for you to get pregnant. Smoking is discouraged because it increases your risk of heart attack and stroke. It does not counteract the birth control!
