IUD and tampons?!

Question: if you have an IUD can you use tampons? I heard they can pull the IUD out. Is this true and has anyone had it happen?

An IUD is placed inside the uterus whereas a tampon is placed inside the vaginal canal. The 2 are separated by the cervix which, by its very nature, doesn't allow allow large solid objects like these to pass through it. Yes there is a string that hangs from the IUD that extends outside of the cervix but it is NOT designed in such a way that it can get caught on a tampon. Even if this were to happen, the IUD is fitted in such a way that a tampon is not strong enough to dislodge it and pull it through the cervix.

As far as other possible effects, yes the string does make you more susceptible to infection but as long as you are using tampons correctly and changing them at the recommended time intervals your risk is no greater with an IUD than without.

My sister has one..She perfers pads because you dont want to get an infection all the way up there =] i would use pads..and bacteria can travel from your tampon up in there to your iud

have a iud....nothing like this has happened....and i don't think it will.

Nope it wont pull the IUD out. Its placed high up in the cervix and it needs to fold in on itself to be yanked out. I had one and I used tampons fine. Its safe or else it would fall out when you had sex too.

I have never heard of that. I have been told by my doctor that tampons are perfectly safe to use when you have an IUD. I imagine he is correct otherwise a man's penis could potentially become snagged on the IUD...that wouldn't be good.

Tampons CANNOT pull your IUD out. I had an IUD for about 8 months and I used tampons all the time. An IUD is too far up in your uterus to have a tampon affect it.

I think you can use them, but I would ask your doctor for sure.

I've had one for about 3 years and there is no way in hell ANYTHING could pull that out. You're good to go.
