It doesn't smell like anything...I had some literally fall and splash all over me....gross! It's just blood and placenta.
By the way, what a disgusting question.
It has no smell @ first but like anything else once it hits the air and is exposed to the elements which leads to decay. It can smell like rotting meat or dead dog.

It smells like horseraddish and strawberries.
it does smell like blood but not like your period. It is different had 4 kids so I know what I'm talking about.
