Higher dosages aren't recommended because there are even more problems associated with it (eg. blood clots).

You should only really think about switching to another kind if you are having a bad reaction to the current one that you are on. Different kinds will do different things to your body and everybody reacts completely differently. If you went onto birth control to relieviate cramping during your period and you have been on your current pill for a good couple of months and it hasn't helped and/or made it worse, then I'd suggest going to your doctor because there also might be other issues associated with the cramping. Your doctor can also change your prescription so you can try another kind that will *hopefully* work for you.

It's not so much about the doses as it is about the type of hormone. There are 6 different types of progestorone (the hormone in BC)

Some types can make your periods lighter/shorter/less cramps. Talk to your doc about which might be right for you.

Yes, a formulation with more/different hormones in it may help with those problems. Oral contraceptives have much lower doses of hormones in them than they used to, so taking one with a little higher amount of them shouldn't be harmful to you. Ask your gynecologist about your options.
