How come I've never heard about cervical cancer until the vaccine came out?!

Question: I always knew there was a "cancer for everything" so the fact that a cancer of the cervix exists isn't the shock, it's the fact that everyone is freaking out about now, since this vaccine came out! I got it out of my own will but what's with all these "I wanna be one less..." as if it's some unstoppable epidemic that's going to kill us all? We never learned about it in school when they taught about sex/STDs (which wasn't too long ago for me) and suddenly it's rampant and insta-death?

It's the drug company that manufactures the vaccine who's bringing cervical cancer into the limelight. If they scare people enough, they think they'll want to buy it.

How old are you? Have you ever had a pap test? If you have, you should have known that cervical cancer was what they were testing for.

Have you been keeping your head in the sand???

People are talking about the vaccine because there is finally a way to try to effectively prevent cervical cancer and deaths amongst the female population. Hopefully one day, other forms of cancer will be prevented too.

And if your school didn't teach you about genital warts in school as an STD then I think your school is sadly negligent.

I am glad you got the vaccine...that was very smart of you :)

Because it wasn't much in the news. But if you were a bit older you would have heard of it when you went for your physical exams and the doctor told you that you needed a Pap smear test.

The pap smear has been around for years, and it was created to test for abnormal cells (cervical cancer). So it's nothing new, it's just most women do not realize the reason for pap smear tests anymore. I think the commercials and vaccine are more to get the word out and be cautious about your own body and choices. It also is saying that using a condom will prevent HPV, which some strands can lead to cervical cancer. A doctor on Oprah said she wasn't entirely convinced of the vaccine's need though... It's all very confusing, but only women younger than 26 can take the vaccine. That's because after that age your bodys cells change and become more protective against disease.
But being older also doesn't mean that your safe, always use a condom. There have been countless women who thought they were being safe or in a relationship, not always the case.

Because they are now marketing the vaccine which means lots of press to help sell the product. Not to minimize the importance of the vaccine but this s how it is done.
