Are hystarectomies performed by laser these days or is it still a massive op lik!

Question: my friend is having one and I'm just curious. Thanks

Unfortunately it is still a major operation. However their are different types of hysterectomys. The total abdominal one which leaves a scar and the vaginal hysterectomy. Really depends on her consultant gynaecologist she should have a word with him about this.

Though I am not a GYN, I have not heard of a laser hyst. The problem with that is the quantity of tissue. A laser is helpful with burning up smaller quantities of tissue, but I don't think it could vaporize a uterus. There are uses for a laser during many types of surgery to assist. Perhaps that is what you are considering. As far as it being a "massive op", there are common techniques now that remove the uterus through the vagina (no abd scar). It is still a major abdominal surgery, but much better tolerated. Many times, though, especially if the ovaries are coming out too (oophorectomy), that opening the abdomen is inevitable. Your friend's GYN is probably covering all this with her ahead of time (or at least should be).

It depends a bit on the area you have the operation in, only some surgeons offer this procedure currently. Also since this operation only hollows out the endometrium it is not the treatment of choice for many patients requiring hysterectomy. For example it is no use for prolapse or tumours. It is usually carried out in women who would previously have had a hysterectomy for intractable bleeding.

hi i had this op 3 yrs ago ..i have a 6 inch scar to prove it... took me along time to get back to normal... you can have it done vaginally too my friend has just had it done before christmas and she went back to work last week you woud nt know she had anything done maybe it depend son the reasons why you have to have it done hope this helps

they can be done trans vaginally instead of through the abdomen. the recovery time is significantly reduced.

It depends. My sister had a fibroid tumor the size of a grapefruit and doctor had to cut her 12" across her lower abdomen. She just had a hyst on Friday and was released from the hospital on Sunday.

They can also do a laproscopy hyst. Have your friend ask the doctor how they will do the procedure.

Good Luck!
