What should I expect from first appointment ??!

Question: My GP has decided to refer me to see a gynaecologist. I have been suffering from irregular very heavy then light periods ,spotting throughout the month and bleeding after sex and pain. I have had the same partner for 14 ( I am 34) years and all tests for infections have come back clear. My last smear was in Nov 06 and was normal and blood tests done in Dec 07 to check hormones were normal .
What do you think the gynaecologist will do at my first appointment in the way of tests etc. I am in the UK....Thanks in advance!!!

Well, this is a total guess, but an educated one based on my and my friend's experiences. First you will likely have a regular pelvic exam for the doctor to see for his or herself what is going on. After that you might have an ultrasound so the doctor can see the internal structures, maybe looking for signs of endoemetriosis, fibroids, etc. I would think that the first appointment will mostly just be a regular exam and a review of your records. Probably lots of questions for you to answer as well.

Good luck!

Very likely just talk to you and possibly take some swabs and urine samples - unlikely to give you an internal.

I'm just supposing that you have children, so you'll probably get an internal, but they'll definitely take a look and ask loads of questions

he will ask you about your problems firstly. then feel your tummy , he will probably do an internal examination, and send you for an ultrasound scan, he may request some blood tests he may do a smear test and he may do some swabs, he will make you a follow up appt to discuss the results. then he will recommend what ever treatment if any you will require.
