Welcome to womanhood. FIrst periods can be confusing, for sure. It is always better to start with pads. Save the tampons for a few months from now.

You will need 3 sizes of pads: Maxis for heavy flow days, Regular for medium flow and light days, and panti liners for the end of your period or the day when you think you are going to start.

Wash your hands first. You can use baby wipes to wipe yourself clean after finishing with toilet paper. These cannot be flushed, though. Wear your oldest underwear (some girls call them period pants) because you usually get some stains on them no matter how careful you are. If you do get blood on your underwear, rinse it in COLD water - never hot -and try some peroxide to get the stain out. (it works better than bleach). Then wash your underwear with the laundry.

Change your pad when it gets about 1/2-3/4 saturated or every 6 hours, whichever comes first. Change it that often to keep down odor. You may see large blobs of red tissue or blackish red tissue - and this is normal. That's the lining of your uterus sloughing off. These usually appear the first two or 3 days and then its just some thin blood.

Occasionally you may have a very heavy flow the first day where you might need to change your pad every two or three hours. As long as this doesn't go on for more than 2 days, you're ok.

When you decide to use tampons you do the same: heavy tampons for heavy flow, medium for medium days and light ones for light days. You MUST change tampons at least every 6-8 hours to prevent toxic shock. Wash your hands before you insert one, and, if it seems to not slide in, use some KY jelly to lubricate the end. NEVER use any type of petroleum jelly inside you -it can cause problems.

Yes, you can shower or bathe during your period, in fact, most girls want to shower more often to keep the odor down. If any clots should come out during your shower they will simply wash harmlessly down the drain. You will find you don't bleed into the water during a bath because the pressure of the water keeps the slough inside you until you get up.

If you have cramps, take Tylenol every 4 hrs per the package. Motrin/Advil/ibuprofen works best on cramps because it is called an NDSAID - an antinflammatory drug. If you find yourself having cramps every month, you can actually prevent them by starting on ibuprofen or aleve 24 hrs before you expect your period to start. This gives your body a head start on pain relief.

Learn to COUNT your periods! Day1 is the first day of your period. Keep counting until you start again - then it's day 1 again. It is very important to know this information as it can tell the doctor if there is a problem. Plus, once your cycles settle down into a pattern you will be prepared for the onset of the next cycle and have your pads/tampons ready to go. It also is key in knowing when you are most at risk of becoming pregnant (and, by the way, you are now certainly able to do this so avoid unprotected sex - actually avoiding sex altogether is best at this point in your life.)

Remember, you cannot flush any pads down the toilet - fold them up, wrap them in tissue and put them into either the container by the toilet or the wastebasket. Those plastic bags from the grocery are good to put pads in, too so you can throw them away every day. Most tampons flush away (some outer guides don't flush, so read the directions), but if you live or are visiting anyone with a well and they have a septic tank, tampons should not be flushed, but wrapped and discarded.

I hope this helps. Most girls aren't smart enough to ask for advice and have to figure it out for themselves

Will to tell you the truth if you don't know how to wear a tampon start with pads

Pads!!!! Then ask your mom about Tampons!

If you just got it today, it's okay to start with pads. But you don't have to.

If you're brave enought to try tampons, I'd go for it!! They don't hurt a bit. If you already have some, there are instructions inside the box. (But those never helped me)

My first time using a tampon, I layed down on my back, and lifted my waist a bit. You'll have no problem finding where to put it, and you're done!

Hope this helps a little bit. =)

It's a good idea to start out with pads. Once you're used to dealing with your period, then give tampons a try.

i would start with a pad first. Later try a tampon there are diagrams on how to use them on the instructions inside the box. I would talk to a parent. I didn't tell my mom and i regretted it. I ended up going up to the school nurse and she told my mom. BUT don't be afraid to ask.

I would say pad. Tampons are for when you get older. If you decide to use a tampon. There is directory's that tell you what to do. Also read the front the risk of toxic shock syndrome. A deadly sickness. Good luck

when i first started i used pads, but now i use tampons b/c their so easy and not messy like pads. with the tampon push it into your vagina, when your ready to change it just pull the string out and insert a new one in.

I didn't use tampons until I'd had mine for a year. I just didn't like the idea of them, plus the few times I'd tried to use them I didn't put them in right and they were extremely uncomfortable. You could try a tampon, but use a smaller one, like a light one. You may not be able to wear it since it's something you have to practice, so wear a pad too.

Definatly start off with pads and when your periods start gettin a bit more regular and you are used to them talk to your mum or sumone about tampons.

Start with pads! After a couple (cycles) ask your mom about using tampons, if she says ok start with lites and work your way up to what size you need. Be sure you read the box carefully and relax when you do use one! Its not that bad.

You might want to start with a pad while you're getting the hang of tampons since they're less nerve wracking. I'd even use a liner with a tampon the first few uses just on the off chance you get leaks.

Sorry, I can't help you with using tampons since I never used them. Tales of toxic shock where everywhere back then, and it scared me off them for good, even though they seem to have the issue fixed now.

At first, the best bet is always to put a pad on. I still dont know how to use tampons. lol. but I dont want to either, so Im sticking with pads.
Good luck.

i'd start off with pads and then after your use to having your period go with tampons, there less messy and more comfortable. but my first few times useing a tampon i also used a pad......just in case.....i hope i helped.....
good luck!!!!

Use pads for now. After you get used to getting a period once a month then try tampons. When you try tampons for the first time buy REGULAR PLASTIC applicator tampons that are UNscented. Open the box and read the enclosed information. It has pictures to show you how to use it.

I just started my fourth cycle yesterday. I just use pads, easy and more comfortable. Be sure to wrap them up before you throw them away, and you may walk a little funny when you stat wearing pads, but you get use to it (I am finally starting to get use to it). Hope this helps!

I would start w/ pads and then try tampons. Most girls go to tampons b/c you can feel them.

i would go with pads first

I started with pads but you can start with a tampon. It doesn't really matter. You can look on the comp how to put them in or you can read the instructions in the box.
