It was found, in a study of 38,000 women, that taking folic acid up to a year before pregnancy gives you a higher chance of a pregnancy going to full term. The USDA has recommended that any woman of child bearing age should take the higher dose just in case a pregnancy should happen. This might have been what your doctor was doing, but you really need to talk to her ASAP to figure out what is going on. Any time a doctor does something that you question, ASK the doctor WHY!!! You are paying them don't forget, and doctors are not all knowing. Something like "why are you prescribing prenatal vitamins to me when I am not pregnant?" Is all it would have taken. It would result in an explanation of the above or a "I thought the nurse TOLD you you were pregnant!"

Why didnt you ask your Dr?
You would be better getting advice straight from them instead of people who dont have all of the information about you

Yeah.. sounds like pregnancy but she should have told you! You should call in and ask what is going on! And the pills won't harm you they are just vitamins that pregnant women take to help keep good calcium and such.

Prenatal vitamins are almost exactly like regular multi vitamins. They have a little extra folic acid and calcium, if I remember correctly, but different ones have different amounts.

They're not just for pregnant ladies. They can be used as a regular multi vitamin. Pregnant women don't even have to take them. There's nothing magical about them. They're pretty much just a regular vitamin.

If you're really curious, ask your OB why she gave them to you.

Prenatal pills are taken when your pregnant or trying to get pregnant. They are just vitiams. All women that could get pregnant are asked to take a vitimam with folic acid in it to prevent birth defect. Did you mean birth control pills?

Women need folic acid in the first 6-8 weeks of being pregnant which is usually around the time most women realize they are pregnant. Prenatal vitamins are good for any woman of childbearing age to take because they help in being proactive as far as keeping your body healthy if you do get preggers plus it makes your hair and nails grow nicely.

If you are preggers or the doc even suspected you are they should have told you because if they didn't and you drank or smoked it could be harmful to the baby. There are plenty of things we abuse our bodies with daily that would not be good for a fetus.
