In a few months I'm going to receive my first papsmere. Any advice?!

Question: I'm a currently at a pediatrian, but my mother is planning on switching me to her gynecologist. The only problem is that my mother doesn't know that I'm not a virgin any more. Will she find out if I get a papsmere? Is there any way to keep her from finding out? Do papsmere REALLY hurt that bad?

The paps mere doesn't hurt. They just put a speculum inside and open you up a little. It doesn't hurt. They just take a q-tip type thing and rub it around inside you to get a sample. Then the doctor will put his finger inside you and press on your stomach at the same time. He will then check your boobs. Just remember, your not the first female he will do this to and your not the last. Some doctors check you rectally. If you don't want this done, tell him. I don't get it done. It hurts me.

About your mom knowing about you having sex already. There is a thing called patient, doctor confidentiality. Your doctor may not discuss this with your mother unless it is a health concern. Tell your doctor that your mother doesn't know that you have had sex and you don't want her to know. He might ask you if you'd like to go on the pill but then your mom might find them. You don't want to get pregnant though. I don't know how old you are but take it easy. Save yourself.

make sure u just stay calm. there really nothing to worry about if you don't think about it u really wont feel anything

When you see a doctor, ANY doctor, you have confidentiality. You doctor can't tell your mother anything that you don't want her to know, unless it is life-threatening. So simply tell your gyno that you'd rather she stay mum on the subject of your virginity.

If you're still pretty young, you may not even need a pap smear - you might only need a pelvic exam. Ask when you get there. Your gyno can tell you what you need and what she recommends.

Pap smears don't hurt very much at all. It hurts like a cramp for about a millisecond and then it's over.

You don't have to go to the same gyno as your mother does, you know. If you're uncomfortable with that idea, ask to switch to another doctor.

She wont be able to know. Because your hymen could be broken from using tampons or doing sport.

Also it doesn't hurt, just make sure you are relaxed.

No, a pap smear doesnt hurt. And there is no way they will know you have had sex unless you tell them. Even if you tell your doctor, your doctor cant tell your parents.

You can tell your mother what you like, but please be honest with your Dr. That is the only way to guarantee the best of care. You can request that your mother wait for you outside in the waiting room to let you have your "big girl" exam alone. As for your doctor being able to tell you are not a virgin, there is no fail proof exam for that, but they will ask.

tell your doctor that you would like to speak with them alone if you could... it's YOUR BODY. and if your mother is taking you to the gyno, she probably won't be too surprised to hear you are sexually active. read this book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler. seriously. asap. get the book.
the papsmere can be akward, as you have someone you've never met before starting into your vagina. but remind yourself how many vaginas this person sees all day, they've heard EVERYTHING there is to hear, seen everything, and can be a great help to you if you're honest and trusting in them. they also attend births and actually have a cool job, helping women's health to bring life into the world!
if you're not a virgin, it won't be as weird, the 'opener' can be a little uncomfortable, feel like it's stretching you, but it shouldn't hurt. goo dluck and ask questions about everything you can think of!!

Looks like you have lots of good answers already. I want to help you get the TERMINOLOGY correct.

It's Pap smear. It is a smear of cells that the doctor takes from your cervix and puts into a culture to see what grows. The test looks for abnormal cells that would indicate infection or precancerous growths.

It is an actual smear of cells. Pap is short for Papanikolaou, the name of the doctor who developed the test for this.

Pap smear. Not papsmere.
